Habitats for Humanity
For the
month of October, I volunteered for Habitats for Humanity. This organization
provides low income families in New Orleans an opportunity to build and finance
safe, affordable homes. I was designated to go to a location in east New
Orleans at 8 am. When I got there, the house was pretty well built, but needed
some finishing touches such as painting and ventilation. We were split into
different teams and my team’s primary responsibility was to set up F-lines.
These lines are set up around the top of the house for ventilation purposes and keeping insects out of the house. This job
was physically demanding as you had to climb a ladder and then manually nail in
the F-lines as well as its supporting structure. In addition, the temperature
was well into the 90s, and therefore, made the task even more difficult. It didn’t
seem like we were making much progress initially but at the end of the day our
F-lines could be clearly seen around the entire house. This was a unique
experience because this was the first time I had volunteered in an area outside
of the medical field. I felt like I gained a new set of skills and met
motivated students who had similar goals as me. I definitely look forward to continuing
volunteering for Habits for Humanity in the month of November and even beyond.
