Last semester, I got the opportunity to volunteer for many wonderful organizations such as Habitats for Humanity and Green Light New Orleans.  This semester I hope to expand on this and reach out to more people in the community. I am excited about volunteering with Green Light New Orleans because I got to connect with a lot of Tulane students while also meeting the people of New Orleans. Through this origination, I helped the residents get more energy efficient LED lightbulbs and I hope to continue this and reduce the carbon footprint.  
In addition, I didn’t get a chance last semester to volunteer at Children’s Hospital but I am committed to making it happen this semester. I used to work with Dr. Baum until he retired and he would show magic tricks to his patients during their visit. While working under him, I learned a lot of these tricks as well. My project this semester is to go to Children’s Hospital and show kids, who are going through rehab, these magic tricks. This will not only be fun for these kids but it will also improve their fine motor skills. I also hope to expand this project to other hospitals such as Tulane Lakeside and I also hope to get more people involved as well in the future.  
Furthermore, this semester will be just as stressful as last and I am particularly nervous about the NBME exam. This semester has added challenges because we are taking four electives but it also means we have an opportunity to expand our knowledge base as we prepare for medical school. Thankfully, the first exam went well but second exam is fast approaching.

The month of March definitely flew fast with Mardi Gras in the beginning and then the NBME exam in the middle. In this hectic month, I found several opportunities to volunteer and dedicate my time to the community. On March 21th, I and two other PhD students from Tulane went to Stuart Hall School for Boys to educate the students on careers in STEM. The PhD students shared their experience and what it took to get to the position that they are in currently. They explained to the students what research they are involved in and what their typical day looks like and the cool things that they do. For example, one of the PhD shared how she went to Africa to do research on the Ebola viruses. I, on the other hand, shared my experience about how I studied Neuroscience in college and then worked in a clinic after and then started the pharmacology masters. April 2019

The month of April was amazing as I had fun doing many volunteering activities. For example, I helped organize a seminar for a doctor, Dr. Raheem. This seminar was open to the public and the doctor talked about various issues such as men’s health. In addition, one of my other activity this month was with Green Light New Orleans. This was a physically challenging activity as I had to lift 55 pounds pavers. I was in charge of dropping off these pavers to many homes as they can use used as support for the rain barrels. This was an interesting month as I got to do activities that were and weren’t medically related. I can certainly say that I learned many things for all of these activities.  In all, this semester and the whole program has been amazing as I got to participate in various volunteering activities that helped me grow as a person. Hello! My name is Hevin and I have been living in New Orleans for the past 12 years. I went to Tulane University for my undergrad and I majored in Neuroscience with a minor in economics. My community service in New Orleans started in high school when I started collecting toys for the Children’s Hospital. This was a unique experience as I and my classmates collected hundreds of toys and distributed to children during Christmas holiday. My community service in New Orleans continued when I went to Tulane University. I volunteered for Make Music NOLA where I mentored students on Saturday mornings during their music class. I shared my experiences with the students about how I was able to overcome challenges and make it to college.   I looked forward to continuing my community service in New Orleans through this master’s program.
